Yes, you read that right - I've gone on three big rides since I moved Rusty last Friday. I think I have put in more hours in the saddle this past week, than I did in most of the month of May at the other place!
Rusty seems to have settled in like a champ. He doesn't appear to be stressed or anything. Although, he was pretty happy to see me on Monday evening. I got to the barn around 5pm and it was hot and the bugs were vicious...(The deer flies and horse flies are vicious right now - the mozzies will be out in full force now since we've had a bunch of rain.) He and the other 2 geldings had been running around to avoid the bugs and they were all sweaty and wild-eyed.
Rusty was fine once we were in the barn and away from the bugs. I had arranged to go out on a nice hack with the barn owner's daughter and a neighbour down the road. All told, we were out riding around for over 2 hours! I don't think we trotted once, but it was fun walking all over the property and down the road and back. We visited the neighbouring barn (fancy dressage place), walked an old laneway with a creepy old house (will try and get pics sometime) and even saw a deer hiding out along the trail.
I feel so welcome at this barn - the people are friendly, the property is gorgeous and it really seems to suit my needs right now. It is also pretty quiet there - there aren't many lessons, if any, going on and people just come and go as they please.
I sort of had Rusty on a "probation" of sorts...I had been pretty frustrated with a mix of my riding skills and his behaviour while at the old barn. I had a really bad ride out around the fields at the old barn and was really second-guessing my move to a trail riding facility. I told myself that I would give Rusty the summer to settle in and see how he did on the trails and I would sell him if needed in the fall.
So far, I think we are good. He has been going out where ever I point his little spotted nose and just trucks along. No spooking, no jigging, no bolting. *Phew!* I rode alone on Wednesday night and he was super - we did a few long trots along some of the trails and he just trucked along - no speeding up, no giraffe impressions... Our ride was cut short due a bunch of black clouds and some thunder. I didn't really want to get caught out in a storm...This weekend, I hope to get a few canters in to see how that goes. I'm not expecting any problems.
All told, I'm pretty happy! Sorry I don't have any pictures yet - Richard took one on Sunday, but I look terrible, so I'm not posting it! I need to find some sort of holder for my iphone so I can take it out with me while I ride. Any ideas? I don't really want it strapped to my saddle, in case I fall. It won't do me much good on the horse!
Name That....

Woo hoo! Things are working out great for both of you. Leah Fry send me my cell phone holder. I won it in a contest. I wish I knew where she got it. It's got several pockets closed by either Velcro or a zipper, and it has this clip that attaches to my belt loop. I've never had it fall off and it doesn't get in the way when I ride. I don't go anywhere without it. It's even got a picture of a horse on the front, so I know it was especially designed for trail riders. It's also an awesome fluorescent green, so if I set it down somewhere I won't forget about it since it's like neon sign flashing in my face. You could head over to Barn Door Tagz and ask her. Hopefully, she remembers who sold it.
Excellent news Laura! So happy to hear you and Rusty are meshing at the new place. Happy Trails ahead for you guys!!!!!
Hmmm... holder for your cell. Are you a belt wearing person, or are we going to have to get creative for you? ;)
You could try one of those arm bands that are intend for joggers to use for their iPods.
I had one and it just slips over your arm and you put the strap as tight as you would like it to be.
So glad things are starting to look up for you!
RE the Ipod... What about one of those little saddle bags that go over the horn...we call the "beer holders" (the carry about two beer).
That's great news so far about your new place - glad you're getting out and around and having fun!
Right On! So glad to hear you are back to enjoying the big spotted guy. I think he is an awesome horse.
Rusty's a good boy. Maybe he was just having a bad day at the old barn.
I'm glad you're enjoying some good trail rides now. Alone even. Wow!
I'm not sure how big an I-phone is, but I carry my cell phone in a velcro ouch that straps to my leg or arm.
~Lisa
Pouch...not ouch! lol!
I don't wear a belt usually, so the velcro strap is perfect for me. I prefer it on my leg, right above my knee, but I've seen plenty of folks strap it onto their upper arm, too.
After falling off my horse last year and her taking off, I will never keep my cell phone in my horn bag. It needs to be on y9our body....just in case your horse runs off.

I am almost 100% sure I passed you when out for a hack earlier this evening. I thought I recognized you but wasn't sure...I almost blurted "little keebler??" but thought that would be weird/creepy.
If I'm right, directly across from your place the eventing barn has a jump field and dressage ring, and the farm name has an element of luck to it. Am I right??
Also, we have the same employer, I believe.
Re: the cell phone holder - I don't usually wear a belt, but the iphone is kinda big, so not sure I want it strapped to my arm... Might have to cave and start wearing belts!
RuckusButt: no kidding! I had no idea! It probably would have totally caught me off guard if you had said something! I totally didn't expect another blogger in the area! Shows you how attentive I am! The same employer too? Are you at HQ?
I'm sure you noticed my lovely tack combo - dressage bridle and western saddle? lol
That is so cool that you board across the road... We'll have to meet officially sometime.
Ha ha! Glad you aren't creeped out! I never expeted to actually "bump into" anyone from blog land either.
I'm on Coventry, soon making the move to Leikn.
I did not notice any odd tack combo...but that's probably because I was too busy staring at Rusty, lol. He looks really good and I don't think photos do him justice :) Don't get me wrong - he looks good in photos but even better in person.
I was riding a big bay and was with another woman on a black Canadian. You joked about out-running the bugs (which was good advice btw) :)
Very exciting news!! I am so glad that Rusty is settling in so well and your rides are going great! Can't wait to see pictures!
There are a couple tack catalogs that sell a cell phone holder, I have one that I don't use anymore, I think it would be big enough for your iphone. It clips to your belt, or belt loop if you don't wear a belt. And yes, you should always keep your cell phone on your person, never on your horse!!
So glad to hear the move has worked out well and you're getting more riding in.
You could head over to Barn Door Tagz and ask her. Hopefully, she remembers who sold it.
