An update of sorts...

Usually updates imply that the person is sharing some sort of relevant news or information that is of interest...  My update today is just for the sake of updating - and it will probably be in bullets, since I don't really have enough to say on one topic.

Not much is new here - it has been raining and my leg condition has been flaring up a bit. Between those two things, I haven't done a ton of riding. I was hoping to be more consistent, but what can you do? I'm just trying to make the best of the time I do have.

  • I have a new saddle pad on order for Rusty - I hope it gets here soon. It is a Cashel swayback pad - I think my saddle is bridging on Rusty and that is what is causing the rubbing on longer rides.  I did some googling and the Cashel pad seemed to be the best solution for a reasonable amount of $$

  • I'm getting close to ordering an endurance saddle - I think I may have lost my mind, but I'm just going with what is fun for me right now...  The endurance saddles look a little weird, but the fun is in all of the wacky colours of saddle pads and biothane tack!  If the swayback pad doesn't help Rusty, I just might have the justification I need to order another saddle! lol

  • I did a big ride last week with Endurance Lady (well, big for me and Rusty, no so much for her) and we covered almost 8 miles (12.8kms) and it was really fun.  I felt great and could have easily gone farther, but Rusty got a bit tired on me towards the end - it was one of our first hot, humid days as well and he doesn't do that great in the heat. I'll have to watch that this summer.

  • We need to get up to 12 miles of riding, at about a 5-6 mph pace to do the bare minimum at a training ride.  Rumour has it that my barn is going to be doing a 6-12 mile fun ride/clinic at the end of June, so I want to be ready for that.

  • Rusty has been coming to me when I call him out in the paddock - this is new - usually he just looks up from his hay, shrugs and goes back to eating, making me go out there and get him.  The past few visits, he has been coming to the gate...  It could just be that I'm there at dinner time or he is enjoying his rides - hard to say with that guy!

  • I am still waiting for my job transfer - paperwork in the government moves like snails in molasses uphill in January... getting this transfer will shorten my commute time and give me more time to ride after work, so I'm really looking forward to that, as well as the change of pace.
And that, folks, is about it.  Pretttty boring around here!  Hopefully I'll have something interesting to post about in the next few weeks.

Keep us posted on how the pad works!

I've mostly accepted that I'll have to have a saddle custom made for Casey at some point. High withers, bridging saddle issues, etc. He's just not your average horse!

The endurance ride sounds like fun!

That wasn't boring at all :) Sounds like you've been riding a decent amount, that possible clinic sounds interesting too. And possibly tack shopping, always interesting lol

Doesn't sound boring at all. Sounds like life. The bullets are a great idea. Easy to read through, too. I should try that sometimes.

It's such an honor when they stop in the middle of their eating to walk up to you, isn't it?
Baby Doll used to do that a lot. Apache, not so much. But we still have a long way to go to rebuild our damaged trust in one another.

And 8 mile ride sounds like heaven. And it's nice that it's warmed up around your area. Around here it's warm, but still very windy. I wish it would rain and the wind would go away. We're frighteningly dry right now with no rain for more than 7 months.

How fun to make riding plans...and endurance no less. Rusty will look handsome in his new tack. Which colors are you thinking of for his biothane headstall, breast collar, and reins?

I'll be interested to know how the Cashel pad works. When I worked at the tack store many swore by those things.

Sounds like your having fun rides with Endurance lady. That's very cool.

I loved the update! How is the cashel working out? I tried an english style jumping one on Brumby with no luck, but he is one picky customer!

You guys looked like you were having a good time tonight! Sorry I couldn't have joined you, I was in a lesson. It was not great so I needed all the focus I could muster. That tree line is going to be our nemesis and Brumby's extra energy from me not riding in the last week didn't help. I've decided all hand grazing is restricted to the scary tree line from now on, mwhahahah!
