Farewell to an old friend

I received a sad email last night from Rusty's (they called him Jesse) current owner. Her words sum things up:
Hi Laura,
I am emailing you with a heavy heart!
We had to put Jesse down today. Jesse sustained an injury this afternoon, he was in his paddock with our five ponies and he broke his leg. It looked to be a spiral break and it was severe. I am not sure how it happened but I feel his age was catching up to him.
My family and I are so terribly saddened as I expect you are as well. He was an awesome horse and was loved by so many here.

My condolences and thank you for sharing this great horse with us.

Yours truly,
J.

I was sad to hear that that he is gone. By my calculations, he was about 21 or 22, but he could have been a bit older. I am so glad I stayed in contact with the new owners, as I would have always worried about him. Old horses don't always fare that well - they can get dumped at auctions and end up in bad places.

In hindsight, he is the one horse I regret selling. Dolly wasn't a good fit for me which I had a hunch about, but ignored. Too bad I hadn't held on another year or two and I could have brought him to my new farm. However, he ended up in a good home and they took good care of him.

I was looking through my blog archives - I bought him in June 2008 and sold him in July 2011. Here is a post from when I went to visit him in the fall of 2011.

I was actually out near the farm where he lived a couple of months ago and thought about stopping in, but didn't take the time. I was trying to distance myself from him a bit and was trying not to worry anymore after hearing an update last year that they were happy with him...

Give your horses, pets and family a hug - we never know what life will bring...

I'm sorry for your and his new owners' loss. What's odd is that Rusty recently popped into my head and I wondered how he was doing. I must have known that something was amiss or about to be. Whenever a person or animal pops into my head without any logical thought process preceding it, I find out later there was a reason for it.

Oh Laura, I am so sorry to hear about Rusty! At least you know he was well loved and cared for at the end, same as you always did for him.

I am so sorry. It's so sad to lose an old friend.

Strangely enough (and equally sad), a good friend just had the same thing happen to her daughter's old horse. Came home from work to load up to come to a barrel race and found the horse in his pasture with a broken leg. No idea how it happened. :-(
