Rusty update: He seems to be improving - he is eating well and his goofy attitude is back. We are still watching him closely. The barn owner and I both thought he might be starting to gain a bit of weight back. We are starting to feel more optimistic about his recovery. I just wrote the cheque for the vet this morning - ouch!
Rusty and I are still working on the dragging lead rope problem. We spent about 30 mins on it on Saturday morning. We ended the session with him stepping on the rope and stopping, instead of stepping on the rope and losing his mind. I'll consider that a bit of progress. I laugh at him the whole time we are working on this - he will back up or walk sideways with his eyes glued to that crazy lead rope. He was even grazing backwards to avoid it. lol

Nothing big happening around here - just trying to enjoy the few sunny days that we have had lately. I spent most of the day volunteering at a local club horse show - it is always fun. The youth classes - 8-13 yrs old - were interesting to watch. The kids and the horses were all wound up. There were several near wrecks and 1 kid ended up getting bucked off. The judge was awesome, she excused the horse and rider for the rest of the day. She wasn't willing to put up with unsafe practices in her ring.

I'm riding some of the barn owners horses for the next month, until Rusty gets the ok from the vet. I was going crazy not riding a little bit over the summer. Fall is short around here, so I didn't want to wait. The barn owner has a decent lease program, with 3 horses that I could ride. They are all older and well-trained. She takes that very seriously. I think it is good to get out an ride other horses as well, so I'm hoping to get in 3 rides/week that way until my old man is ready to start work again.

Glad to hear your boy is starting to feel better!
haha! Yep, it's easy (and a good thing) to feel optimistic when looking at expensive horse vet bills! :O
I'm glad he's doing better and that you've had some time to play...er..work with him. What a goofy boy with those lead ropes.
I think it's great that you're going to ride some other horses soon. I can't wait to read your experiences.
I'm going to ride with my instructor/friend on a trail ride this week, using one of her lesson horses.
I bought my own horse through my instructor actually. Baby Doll was being used as lesson horse until the right buyer (me) came along :)
She tells me that this horse I'm riding Wednesday is a thoroughbred. Ummmm...ok.
Wish me luck.
I don't like to ride faster than a slow trot. :O
Glad to hear Rusty is making progress :)
Riding other horses is always a good thing. Helps give you more experience.
Getting his "goofy" attitude back sounds very promising! :-)
Stepping on his rope and not freaking out is huge progress! I love how he grazes backwards some, teach that to Less so I don't have to worry about my toes!
Glad Rusty is feeling better - you guys must have been right with the Ulcer diagnoses.
That's smart thinking to riding something else - I will occasional head out to my old barn up here by Spokane when i am needing something to ride or groom when i am missing my boys at the trainers. Keep ya from going nuts.
Well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Glad to hear that Rusty is on the rebound. And also that you are going to keep on riding. That is one thing that a lot of one or two horse owners don't usually get the opportunity to do. I think everyone should ride as many horses as possible. It makes for much improved confidence and horsemanship.
Glad Rusty is gaining!! Also really glad that you are getting to ride while he recuperates.
Looking forward to hearing that Rusty has the all clear to go back to playing with you!
