This led me to a mini-panic about all of our other important papers - marriage license, mortgage documents, work related documents (pension, insurance, etc.), life/house insurance forms and contact info. My plan for the weekend is to organize all of this information into one location so that we can find it in an emergency.
I do have a horse related twist to this post - don't worry! This also led me to realize that my horsey papers were strewn all over the house. Bills of sale, vet records, association memberships, etc. were in piles and some in unopened envelopes!
So, I'm going to put together a binder for Mr. Rusty - so that everything is organized - just in case.
Here are a few things that will be in my binder:
- Rusty's bill of sale
- Printed emails from previous buyer with notes on Rusty's past
- Vet pre-purchase certificate
- Vaccination records
- Vet records
- Ontario Equestrian Federation membership card/contact info - they provide insurance to members. This might come in handy if something were to happen to me
- RideOntario time log (some associations have logs that allow you to accumulate hours working with your horse that in turn equal prizes)
- Receipts from expensive tack purchases (stubben saddle)
- Membership information for local horse clubs that I belong to, along with contact info and passwords
I was at a show recently and some owners were really organized - binders seemed to be the most popular. Others had no clue where their forms/insurance/registration papers were.Other things that could go in your horse file system are:
- breed registration certificates (you'd be amazed at the number of local horse for sale ads that go something like this - "this horse is registered "x", but we lost the papers!
- breed organization member cards/member pin numbers/passwords
- futurity nominations/forms/results, etc.
- breeding information, as well as photos of offspring
- show records/results - might come in handy if you were to sell your horse
- photos from shows/events/phases of life (ie weanling/yearling/2yr old etc.)
- trailer safety documents/bill of sale/insurance info
- horse insurance papers
I'm sure there are more things, but that's all I can think of for now. Does everyone have a binder/book/box for their horse(s)?

Funny you should mention this, I just bought a new organizer for my horsey information and vet, hay, and tack receipts, etc. I had been stuffing everything into a pee-chee, but decided more organization was needed. Thanks for the great tips and ideas!
That's something I've been meaning to do but haven't really gotten through it yet.
Although my membership cards (AQHA, APHA and SBRA) are in my wallet. :) Don't have an appy membership, not sure if I need it. And not sure where the heck my Sask. Horse Fed. membership is. Hmmm.
Pony Girl: Forgive me if this is a stupid question but... what is a "pee-chee"?
This is a very smart post. I lost my horse's registration papers after a very tumultuous period in my life, which included a death and two moves. (I am still convinced the papers are out there somewhere, probably with one of my relatives, but I have long since given up trying to find them.) The horse was given to a wonderful friend who would and will keep this mare for life. The only snag caused by the missing registration papers is that now the mare won't be bred, which honestly I think is for the best anyway.
Still makes me feel like a total and complete dolt for losing important papers, though. I will never do it again.
yes, it is a good idea to keep important papers rounded up in case of emergencies too, like fire or tornado, etc.
However, I am the devil's advocate, I had to reorder SSN and birth certificates for my kids because I lost them. And then I found them. But, having two sets isn't such a bad idea...
I just have to say first that your blog header features ONE CUTE HORSE!
Organization is not my thing, plus I share the space with an anal-retentive husband who tends to refer to "our" officespace as "my command central." Just fyi, there is an online org tool (for vet paperwork, etc) at www.rendaivu.com
I was asked to review it in my blog, and it looked useful, but so far I've not been inspired...
Cowgirl,
A Pee-Chee is a folder, used to be a specific kind of folder one could get for school. It had cheat sheet type info on the inside of it and they came in a generic peachy type color with graphics that you could color yourself. I think they had pockets on the inside too.
I wouldn't have even known that if I hadn't had found my mom's and asked her what it was. That's old school stuff there.
Laura,
I have a folder similar to that, saves my butt all the time to put stuff in there as I get it. Put all of my show info in it too. Yes, some people at the shows have elaborate ones too I have noticed, because they whip them out at every opportunity - almost done up like a scarp book.
Wish I had that much time!
Good reminder. I keep everything for my horse, llamas, goats, etc in individual file folders in my file cabinet.
Pretty basic, but it works good for me.
