In the past 2 weeks, 4 prospects turned up. (I wasn't being to particular about breed here, any breed that met my criteria would have been considered.)
The first 3 prospects all sounded ok, but had a few teeny red flags, so I didn't go try out the horses. The fourth is a 17yr old Appy gelding - this one sounded promising. He was ridden regularly by children, had been to shows, had been out on trails.
As you know, I went to see this guy and rode him 3x over the past week or so. He has been very consistent each time - w/t/c no problem. He has been in dressage training for the past year, but not super good at it. He could do training level ok, but that would be the extent of it. So his owner bought a fancy young warmblood.
I had this horse vet checked on Wed. and at 17 he was given a clean bill of health. No lameness issues, hooves good, no arthritis visible (yeah!), eyes and teeth good, back good, etc. I was half expecting something minor to show up - some sort of arthritis - but the vet and I were both pleasantly surprised to see nothing at this time.
Soooo, I worked out an agreement with the seller - and I now have a horse again!!! He will hopefully be trucked over to my barn early next week.
I'm really looking forward to getting going with this guy - I will be able to ride 4-5x/week and I'm hoping we can do alot together... Hopefully I've made the right decision this time around. I'm hoping that if a 9 year old girl can handle him, I'll be just fine.
Here are a couple of pictures - please ignore me - I look like a sausage with legs. Hoping to remedy that this year. His name is Jessie - which I don't like at all. I'm trying to find something that sounds similar - so far, I'm thinking of Ollie, Rusty or Eddie - any suggestions?

Oh, Cute appy. As you know from my blog I also have an appy who is 12. I really hope that he works out for you. And I think you look fine on him. I'm really bad at names hence my horse being called Possum (he came with it) If I think of something I'll let you know.
Yay!!! I'm so happy for you :)
He looks like he's posing for a proud picture with his new owner.
As for names, if you really want to change it just play around and you'll know what fits him & you.
Changing a horse's barn name is bad luck - even if you don't like it I'd keep it.
Bad luck seems to follow me at times...
Hmm... I hadn't thought of that. Although I know it used to be popular in some disciplines to change the name every time a horse was sold. His new name would be that of the old owner.
("John" buys a horse from "Frank" and now the horse's name is Frank)
Congrats on that handsome, beautiful boy! I sure do hope he works out, too. You're the righ size for him, and he seems like a good all around horse from what you've written about him.
Plus he is gorgeous! Definite Eye Candy!
How 'bout 'Justin'? or 'Jackson'? (The second one is one of my son's names. And he's a really sweet boy)
My horse's registered name is "Dakota's Baby Doll", but her barn name is 'Dolly'. I SO dislike tha name Dolly.
It's just so weird first of all and second, my hubby's grandmother had the most annoying Schnauzer named 'Dolly'.
She's 15 and seems to know her barn name and will come when called. But I've been adding in my own version either "Baby Girl", "Pretty Girl", or "Baby", and she's coming around to the different names finally.
I still plan to use her 'barn name' but mostly in the same way that I use my kids' names when they are in trouble (first, second and last names)! hehe
So, she'll know when I'm serious about something, I hope! haha
Yippee! You got the Appy! That is so great he passed his vet check with flying colors. I personally like the name Jessie. ;) But I wonder if you should just see what "fits" him the first week you spend with him...Twinville mentioned "Jackson" and I thought he kind of looked like a "Jack" or "Jake", too. Or a "Cody"...
The horse I just sold was named Jackson - which I liked. He's still at the barn I'm at, so that might get confusing to me and the horses!
I don't think he comes when called - I'll try it though. If he does, I might not change the name. We'll have to see how it goes.
He is arriving Monday morning, so I'll be sure to get more pics of him without the giant sausage/human on his back. ;-p
ponygirl - is your name or a family member's name Jessie???? I don't mean any offense by not liking the name - it's just this kid we know that is alot of trouble has the same name...
Thanks! I posted another picture and fixed the other one so it can be made bigger if you click on it.
Steph - I normally wouldn't bother changing his name - but the name Jessie is a bad one in our family - it envokes drug use and teenage pregnancy - yikes.
