I made it out for another ride yesterday. It had been snowing for two days straight, so I just decided I might as well go and see what happened. Often, the day after it stops snowing is really cold and windy, so I didn't want to wait to try and ride... (and I was right - today is freezing cold and windy!).
I didn't mind riding in the snow, since it would give me an opportunity to try out my new (used) wool quarter sheet that I found at the bottom of a pile of ratty old blankets at a tack shop. I love second-hand tack and try to buy used stuff where I can. I had been meaning to pick up a quarter sheet for a while, because I think they look cool. Of course, sometimes the problem with buying used is that you don't get a lot of colour selection. I wouldn't really say that the red plaid matches his coat, but I don't really care. I won't be using it much and it is more to amuse me than anything.
We trudged around the fields with Richard and Max happily following along. I think my dog loves snow more than any creature I know. He rolls and runs and digs in it like a mad man. I'm glad we are able to take him out to this barn!
You can't really do too much "riding" in this weather - the footing was ok, but not great. You could probably trot the edge of the hay fields, but I didn't really feel the need to bother. Rusty and I are on winter vacation until the snow melts, so this was just a fun ride (and probably my last for a couple of weeks, since we leave on Friday for our trip!!)

Hey! You can use that quarter sheet when you're riding during hunting season too!
I have a horrible leopard print shoulder guard for Molly and Casey (whichever I choose to put it on). It would look HORRID on Casey and stick out. So, I'm likely to put it on Ms. Thing as her yellow color might help the leopard blend in more. The price was right so I'm not going to complain. Just hide it under blankets as much as possible! ;-)
As long as the sheet keeps Rusty (and yourself) warm, that's all that matters!
Roan and plaid makes a statement. You're doing better than me getting out in the snow at all.
I like the plaid. It was all I could do to get myself out there for an hour to feed. I still can't feel my feet. I know I don't have the proper clothing for this kind of cold, but I'm not willing to pay for stuff that I may use once a winter that will take up closet space the rest of the time.
WV = pregs
You're not, are you?
Love the quarter sheet, if it didn't rain so much here and I actually was able to ride I probably would get one!
I love riding in the snow, but haven't done it in years. Glad you got out to enjoy a ride on Rusty!
Rusty looks great in his new quarter sheet. Boys can always wear plaid; it's rugged and manly.
looking... very... familiar! I have been doing some snowy riding too! No half sheet for the porky haflinger though! I think he looks great!
I like that pic, Rusty looks so proud and vibrant!
Funny, I've been thinking on and off about getting a quarter sheet too. Just wasn't sure if you can really use them under a Western saddle, do you put yours under your pad or over it?
I like the way Rusty looks in his new colors. Glad you got out for a ride in the snow/ It sounds like fun. Enjoy your trip!
Leah Fry - No!!!! :-)
Cdn - sheet over saddle pad
I've been looking for an excuse to use it - Rusty doesn't really need one, but it was snowing pretty hard, so I thought I might as well try it...
Golden - I'm heading to Florida on Friday...!
You know after seeing a bigger picture I do think that roan and plaid match.
I thought the red plaid looked great on Rusty. He's stylin' for sure!
No serious riding here this winter. Anything I am managing to squeeze in is purely for fun, a mental break for both me and the Legs. I am hoping to get on Storm too but I need some kind of weather break to get a chance to lunge him. He is not anywhere near being trained enough to tolerate this on again off again riding without being very naughty.
i LOVE the plaid!!!!
It looks great on him!
Oooh! The second photo of the two of you took my breath away. Both because it looks so freezing cold, and because the two of you look amazing!
Looks like you could be Irish in the tartan plaid. I bet Rusty enjoyed having nice warm butt muscles, too. :)
