We spent a couple of days in Ft. Lauderdale before heading out on a 7 day Caribbean cruise. I love seeing the Caribbean islands, but as for cruising, I could take it or leave it, to be honest. I found myself feeling a bit trapped on the days at sea. The ship had approx 2800 passengers and at least 1000 crew members. It was a small floating city. Every where you went, there were people. Most people were friendly and there was lots of "where are you from?" going on. Every time I sat down somewhere I seemed to attract little old retired couples from New York City! I didn't mind talking to them at all, because I love a good NYC accent - until one lady started telling me her medical history! Yikes! I get people telling me their life stories alot when I am out - I guess I have a friendly face or something. I also have a hard time making excuses to get out of awkward conversations!
I'm glad to be home - travelling, while fun - always reminds me how lucky I am to have what I have at home. I'm not rolling in money (saw lots of that) nor am I extremely poor (also saw lots of that). Here are a few pictures - lots more on facebook if anyone is interested...
The dining room on the cruise ship...modern and huge! The food was delicious, but I'm glad to be back to regular fare.
Our first sunset at sea - this might be Miami - can't quite remember...
Arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The old fort - Fort San Felipe del Morro - dominates the view.
I really liked San Juan - we only walked the old city, but it was really interesting. I love history, so learning about the places I'm visiting is interesting for me. Richard and I walked several miles that day, exploring the old city together. In fact, I took more pictures in San Juan than I did anywhere else.
Inside the fort...
Interesting old crest
The view wasn't too bad...
Me standing in a little guard post - there wasn't much room inside.
Fun with the zoom
We then took a taxi to a beautiful beach on the French side of the island. The view was nice, the sand soft and the water warm. It was a nice relaxing day.
Our next stop was St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. Another beautiful spot - we quickly ditched the city and headed out to a nice beach. Richard was able to do some snorkeling here. He saw several sea turtles, as well as rays and lots of colourful fish. He even saw a barracuda!
Waves hitting the shore on a rocky section of the beach

Niiicccceee!!!
One of my uncles lived in St. Croix on the Virgin Islands for years. I feel really dumb for not ever having taken the time to visit. Now he lives in Arkansas! Talk about a missed opportunity.
Love the pic of you laying at the beach looking out on the water. A true perspective-LOL.
Glad you guys had fun and got a little break from your Canadian winter. ;-)
Oh my gosh.... I want to go to the beach sooooo bad now. Fantastic pictures! Love the one of the Fort! Glad you got to go have some fun!
We went to San Juan on our honeymoon and just LOVED it! Glad you had a great trip!
Glad you enjoyed your trip. I NEVER feel trapped on a cruise. Depending on where we're headed, I've been known not to get off the boat! Park my sorry ass on a deck chair with a drink in one hand a book in the other, and I'm calling it bueno.
BTW, I LOVE Puerto Rico.
So glad you had a good time! I agree with Stephanie, your post made me want to be on a beach SOOOO bad! I suspect I'd feel trapped on a cruise too. Luckily you missed the horrible cold we had.
Glad you enjoyed your trip! Puerto Rico seems very, very interesting!
Also appreciate your view on cruises. I, myself can get claustrophobic and truthfully, I don't really like people, most people all that much. I could probably rival MM for Golden Hermit Status or even steal it from her most of the time! I think I'm probably be irritable by the end from not being able to "escape".
Beautiful photos!
The pictures look great, wish I was there right now! I don't think I could do a cruise, it would be too confining for me. Glad to hear I'm not the only person that people come up to and tell their life history to.
Funny, we were just talking about cruises at work! I think I'm too burned out on 'the general public' to deal with being trapped on a ship with sooo many people! lol
Glad you had a good trip, sounds like you guys timed it right too.
I don't think I'd like the cruise ship thing although I'd love a chance to see those beautiful Caribbean waters. That many people all in one place with no place to really escape.
Sounds like you met lots of interesting people. How did you get out of hearing a complete medical history?
Glad you got a break and are safely back home.
