We have had some pretty unseasonal weather here over the past week, so I decided I had better get out to the barn for a ride while I could.
It was damp and foggy, but Saturday's temps were above 0C and I think it even made it up to 6C (43F) for a few hours!
The footing was mostly good, although there were a few spots that had a bit of ice. Rusty was happy to go around those and so was I. Although, at one spot along the trail, he stepped around a chunk of ice and put me into some wet cedar branches - that wasn't the worst of it - one big branch hit me right in the arm and it took alot of strength to push past it - a smaller rider might have been knocked out of the saddle!
We didn't do much but walk around the fields. It was nice to be out in January and not be freezing cold! Rusty was feeling a bit fresh, which probably makes him like a normal horse, since he is pretty laid back most of the time. Today is my last day off work ( boo!) so I'm hoping to get out for another ride later this afternoon.
We even had some greenish grass out near the paddocks. It is such a novelty to see any grass in January that I gave Rusty a few minutes to have a little snack... :-)

How nice to get a ride on the first day of the year - we've been too cold and windy but I'm hoping for today!
What a nice reward for Rusty. You take good care of your boy. :)
We don't see grass here until July and August, when we finally get some rain.
We're still down in the teens(F)and covered in snow and ice here so no riding for me. But I think it's so cool that you got out to ride. You look so happy up on your handsome steed surrounded by fog.
What is it about horses not realizing that large branches can knock their rider off? Or maybe they do....hehe!

Just wanted to let you know you guys look Awesome together! I got the biggest smile on my face ever when that picture of you and Rusty man loaded.
Thanks for the smile chickee!
Aw, you and Rusty look awesome! It HAS been a nice break but I'm still hoping for snow so we can hack outside more often. I'm kinda bummed about going back to the regular grind tomorrow too. I think I'm in a bit of denial.
How lovely you got to ride and it was so nice!
I am so jealous of anyone who's gotten to ride already this year. I'm dying to get back in the saddle but it's too icy here to even get my horse to the trailer to haul somewhere.
Looks like you had a wonderful ride! We have been stuck in the below freezing pattern for over a week, I feel like we will never unthaw, although it keeps the mud at bay right now, until it warms up then right back to the mucky mess!
Rusty looks really good and that grass must have tasted mighty good!
Looks like winter hasn't even hit you guys yet! (Guess you're no where near where that hiway got shut down in December hey? lol)
I didn't get in a ride on New Year's Day BUT I did get one in on the 2nd! :)
Thanks everyone!
RB - some really nice soft powder would be nice to ride in - maybe we'll get some soon...
Lisa- no, that highway is a few hours SW of where I live. It is close to my Mom's though - we drove that highway over the holidays. Snow blows and drifts alot because it is all big open cornfields surrounding the highway... In the city, my Mom got 5ft of snow! (mostly melted now though...)
Glad to hear you got a ride in on New Year's day! I'll bet Rusty was happy to get out for a while too. Hope your weather stays warm.
Lucky you to have a New Year's day ride! If I remember correctly, the weather wasn't too bad, but I was still recovering from a dental infection and then thre my back out. Nice start, eh?
